If you want to experience a real Trini market this is the place to go. No ones prices beat ot . in general, and its truly an experience. Don't be fooled you don't HAVE to go super early in the morning. It pays to if you have specific stuff you need to get but its not necessary.

The Central Market is a great place to purchase authentic local spices and condiments that will go well with pretty much any dish. It’s filled with vendors who are a part of a unique history and culture waiting for an audience to share their stories (and make a sale). We strongly recommend trying Polly’s boiled channa in a cup with mango chutney as an early morning breakfast and purchasing a container to go. She also sells lovely condiments (see photo). Doubles are also available at the market.

The Central Market is definitely a very unique place. As a outsider I was very unsure about my safety. The place comes across as extremely dirty but that is my American viewpoint. I will say this that in the midst of some of the not so nice I did meet some very nice people. I enjoyed some fresh coconut and fresh pineapple. Both the product and those selling them were fun and Lively people who made me feel welcome. That part of the market was a wonderful experience. Unless you are a local I would hesitate and bringing children there that are under 12 or 13. I also would make sure that wherever you park, you are very situationally aware of yourself when you leave and return to your car to exit the market. There was one instance where I know for sure I had a few people walking a little close to me. The easy way to stop that is for you to stop in your tracks immediately and turn around. It usually startles them and they keep on walking. In this case that's exactly what happened. So if I was a young lady or a woman who might feel vulnerable, I would think twice about going there by yourself. If you're not worried about security then you certainly would get a great taste of culture by spending a few hours with the cool people that are definitely there showing some great tropical products
